The HALT Technique

A common tool in rehab and twelve-step programs is the use of the HALT technique. It is an acronym for “hungry, angry, lonely, tired.” It is a tool to remind addicts where they may be most vulnerable to relapse. We can use this tool for self-awareness and to identify any underlying, more proximal causes of our day-to-day stressors.
I have added an additional question that revolves around our incessant need to remain forever comfortable, to experience only “positive” emotions and feelings, or to avoid all that is unpleasant and uncomfortable. So, next time you’re stressed or triggered, ask yourself if you’re experiencing any underlying proximal causes:
- Am I hungry?
- Am I angry?
- Am I lonely?
- Am I tired?
- Am I trying to avoid discomfort?
